Commercial design at its best. Renowned architect Benjamin P. Butera was selected to design the 7-million-dollar Hammock Dunes clubhouse renovations and additions that were concluded in 2019. The revitalization project remodeled the golf club’s entrance lobby to serve as a welcoming and functional space for members and the dining amenities to create a new bar-and-grill restaurant with more ocean-view outdoor sitting. It also includes a new state-of-the-art fitness center of 5,500 square feet to include a group fitness room and a space reserved for individual physical and occupational therapy in partnership with AdventHealth.

After reopening the clubhouse, the restaurant saw a 45% increase in diners, and the new fitness center experienced a 100% increase in participation in workout classes. Both new areas maximize the ocean views and overlook the Hammock Dunes Links course and croquet lawn, which is home to one of the largest croquet associations in Florida. These renovations are consistent with Hammock Dunes’ new tagline: “Always an Oceanfront State of Mind.”

Hammock Dunes was originally conceived by ITT Community Development Corporation as a planned community in Palm Coast, Florida, for their employees to retire in. The vision was to develop five miles of the Atlantic coastline of Flagler County by creating dwelling units, multiple recreation and relaxation amenities like a links golf course, and dedicated environmental and nature conservation areas.

Today, this upscale gated community boasts two Audubon-certified exclusive golf championship courses that give members two different golfing experiences that complement each other. The oceanfront Links Course is surrounded by luxury custom homes and the Atlantic Ocean. The Creek Course is immersed in nature and is traditionally the site of the US Open and US Amateur Regional Qualifying events. Accessible via a private toll bridge, the Hammock Dunes oceanfront community also offers a heated pool and spa with aqua fitness and aqua aerobics classes, which, in combination with the golf courses, fitness center, and tennis, pickleball, oceanfront croquet, and bocce ball amenities, allows members to enjoy a healthy lifestyle.

Ben Butera’s longstanding connection with ITT and Palm Coast goes back many years, as, upon relocating to Florida in 1978, he was quickly discovered by ITT and became Staff Architect for their Palm Coast development project, the largest on the east coast at the time. Although he left ITT in 1980 to work independently and eventually establish his own architecture firm, he has continued to work with custom homeowners, planned community managers, developers, and HOAs, as well as with the City of Palm Coast on a wide range of design projects over the decades, and still does to this day.
